Can someone see if I turn off my location?

It depends on the app. Apple says "The person that you stop sharing with won't be notified", while Life360 says your Circle sees a "Location Sharing Paused" label under your name. Snapchat, Instagram and Google Maps document what the other person's screen shows and say nothing at all about notifying them.

Does airplane mode turn off location?

No. Airplane mode is a switch for radios: Apple's page says it "turns off all radios except for Bluetooth", and Google's says Wi-Fi and Bluetooth go off with it. Neither company's airplane-mode page mentions Location Services, GPS or location of any kind.

Does Find My notify when you turn off location?

No, and Apple states it in one sentence: "The person that you stop sharing with won't be notified." Apple's Personal Safety guide adds that the people you previously shared with "may notice that you've stopped", and that on earlier operating systems "they may receive a notification in Messages that you stopped sharing."

Does Instagram notify when you turn off location?

Not documented. Instagram's map page never says whether the people you were sharing with are told when you stop; it documents notification only in the other direction — "You'll receive a notification when someone requests to see your locations." What it does document is the state your own settings screen shows: "A red dot: You're not sharing your location."

Does Life360 notify when you turn off location?

Not as a notification. Life360's page says that when you turn off Location Sharing, "other members of your Circle will see 'Location Sharing Paused' under your name." Turning the app's location permission off in your phone's settings shows them a "Location permissions off" alert message instead.

Does Snapchat notify when you turn off location?

Not documented. Snapchat's Ghost Mode page does not say whether friends are told; it says only that in Ghost Mode your location "won't be visible to anyone else on the Map." The one notification sentence Snapchat prints runs the other way: "Friends you select aren't notified when you choose them."

How to know if someone is tracking your phone

Only the sharing lists your phone already keeps can answer this from documentation. Apple's Safety Check and Google's Location sharing list show every person you currently share a location with, and both phones raise an alert when an unknown Bluetooth tracker travels with you. Start there: it is the part of this question the vendors actually put in writing.

How to stop sharing location with one person

Not everyone has to come off at once: Find My, Messages, Google Maps, Snapchat and Instagram all have a per-person control. In Find My it is People, the person, Stop Sharing My Location; in Google Maps it is Location sharing, the person, Stop. Apple is the only one of them that states whether that person is notified.

How to tell if someone turned off their location

Not reliably. Every one of these apps shows the same thing whether a person turned sharing off, switched their phone off, or lost signal: a stale pin, a short label, or nothing at all. The vendors document what those labels say; none of them documents a message that means "this person turned it off".

How to turn off location temporarily

Yes, several of these apps ship a timer, and it is the only kind of temporary this site will describe. Find My shares for an hour or until the end of the day and can hide you from one person until the next day; Snapchat's Ghost Mode takes 3 hours, 24 hours or Until Turned Off; a Life360 Bubble runs up to 6 hours. Everywhere else the temporary version is the ordinary switch, turned off and then back on by you.

How to turn off location without notifying

It depends on the app, and only Apple and Snapchat answer it in writing. Apple says the person you stop sharing with won't be notified, and its own safety guide adds that they may notice you have stopped; Snapchat says friends you pick for a location setting aren't notified when you choose them. Life360, Google Maps and Instagram document what the other person's screen shows instead, which is not the same promise.

"Location Not Available" vs "No Location Found"

Not the difference most people expect, because Apple only defines one of them. Apple's current pages document "No location found" — what Find My shows when a person or a device can't be located — along with "Offline", "No location available" and "Location Services Off" for a device. Apple does not publish a page saying which cause produced the label you are looking at.

Location Services is greyed out

Usually something is holding the switch, not breaking it. On an iPhone that is normally Screen Time: Content & Privacy Restrictions can lock a Settings row until it is set back to Allow. On a work, school or family-managed device, a management profile or an Android administrator can do the same thing, and the phone will not let you override it.

What happens when you turn off location on iPhone?

Not everything stops. Apple says that with Location Services off, "apps can't use your location from Location Services in the foreground or background" — but its safety guide adds that "third-party apps and websites may still use other ways to determine your location." Emergency calls are the documented exception: your location may be used "regardless of whether you enable Location Services."
