TurnOffLocation Questions Does Snapchat notify when you turn off location?

Question

Does Snapchat notify when you turn off location?

Not documented. Snapchat's Ghost Mode page does not say whether friends are told; it says only that in Ghost Mode your location "won't be visible to anyone else on the Map." The one notification sentence Snapchat prints runs the other way: "Friends you select aren't notified when you choose them."

Snapchat's help pages describe Snap Map in terms of visibility, not alerts. Across the Ghost Mode page, the page on sharing with select friends and the page on how long a location lasts, there is no sentence saying a friend is notified when you stop sharing — and no sentence saying they are not. That absence is the accurate answer, and the rest of this page is what Snapchat does document.

What Ghost Mode does, in Snapchat's words

"When you enable Ghost Mode, your location will still be shared with Snap, but it won't be visible to anyone else on the Map." Two halves, and the second half is the one people miss: Ghost Mode hides you from friends, not from Snap.

There is also something friends can see. "When you're in Ghost Mode, your Bitmoji will hold up a blue sign with a ghost icon, unless you are sharing your live location." That is not a notification pushed to their phone, but it is a visible state on the Map if they look you up.

Ghost Mode is timed. Snapchat's steps end with: "Select a timer for how long you want to stay in Ghost Mode (3 hours, 24 hours, or Until Turned Off)." Pick one of the first two and you come back out on your own.

Choosing who can see you

Snapchat's page on sharing with only some friends is where the one notification sentence lives: "Friends you select aren't notified when you choose them." It is about picking an audience, not about switching sharing off, so it does not answer the Ghost Mode question — but it is the closest Snapchat comes to addressing notification at all.

Your last position does not vanish instantly

Snapchat: "That depends on your device settings. For example, if your device's location permission is set to 'Always,' it will stay on Snap Map until you turn it off or it expires. If your permissions are set to 'Only while using,' your location on the map will expire after 24 hours." So after you take the app's permission away in your phone's settings, what friends saw last can sit on the Map until it expires.

The step lists for Ghost Mode, for choosing an audience, and for the phone permission are on the Snapchat page of this site.

Question Can someone see if I turn off my location? It depends on the app. Apple says "The person that you stop sharing with won't be notified", while Life360 says your Circle sees a "Location Sharing Paused" label under your name. Snapchat, Instagram and Google Maps document what the other person's screen shows and say nothing at all about notifying them. Question Does Instagram notify when you turn off location? Not documented. Instagram's map page never says whether the people you were sharing with are told when you stop; it documents notification only in the other direction — "You'll receive a notification when someone requests to see your locations." What it does document is the state your own settings screen shows: "A red dot: You're not sharing your location." Question How to turn off location temporarily Yes, several of these apps ship a timer, and it is the only kind of temporary this site will describe. Find My shares for an hour or until the end of the day and can hide you from one person until the next day; Snapchat's Ghost Mode takes 3 hours, 24 hours or Until Turned Off; a Life360 Bubble runs up to 6 hours. Everywhere else the temporary version is the ordinary switch, turned off and then back on by you. App guide Snapchat Ghost Mode hides you from friends on Snap Map, and Snapchat documents that your location is still shared with Snap while you are in it. The location permission in your phone's settings is a different switch, and it is the one that stops Snapchat receiving your position at all. App guide Find My Find My has one switch per person, a one-day pause per person, and one master switch for everyone; Messages, Maps and Contacts all reach the same share. Apple's sharing page says the person you stop sharing with is not notified. Apple's safety guide adds that they may notice you have stopped. iOS 27 · iPadOS 27 iPhone & iPad One master switch, one switch per app, and a precise-or-approximate choice underneath each. Most people want the second one.
