Does Instagram notify when you turn off location?

Not documented. Instagram's map page never says whether the people you were sharing with are told when you stop; it documents notification only in the other direction — "You'll receive a notification when someone requests to see your locations." What it does document is the state your own settings screen shows: "A red dot: You're not sharing your location."

Instagram's page about sharing your location on the map is detailed about who can see what, and silent about being told. There is no sentence saying the people you share with are notified when you stop, and no sentence saying they are not. Everything below is what the page does say.

The two notification sentences Instagram prints

Both are about requests, not about stopping. "You'll receive a notification when someone requests to see your locations." And: "People that've asked to see your location won't be notified when you decline their request." So declining a request is documented as quiet. Ending a share you already had is not addressed at all.

What your own screen shows

"When you view Settings in the top right of the map and see: A blue arrow: You're sharing your location with your selected audience. A red dot: You're not sharing your location. An orange triangle: You need to enable location permissions on your device to share your location." Those three states are described as what you see, not what anyone else sees.

Your pin fades on its own

"If you share your location, it will update each time you open Instagram or return to the app if it's been running in the background. Your location disappears if you haven't opened or returned to the app within 24 hours." That is Instagram describing a pin going away without anyone changing a setting, which is worth knowing before you read anything into someone else's map.

Two switches, not one

Instagram is explicit that the map setting and the phone permission are separate: "Your location sharing setting for the Instagram map is separate from your device's setting for location sharing with Instagram. For example, if you turn off location sharing to the Instagram map, location services can still be on for Instagram." It adds that "location services must be on to use this feature", so taking the phone permission away leaves the map with nothing to publish.

There is also a middle setting. "When you are inside a hidden place, no one will see you on the map", and you can hide your location from particular accounts. The step lists for all of these are on the Instagram page of this site.

Question Can someone see if I turn off my location? It depends on the app. Apple says "The person that you stop sharing with won't be notified", while Life360 says your Circle sees a "Location Sharing Paused" label under your name. Snapchat, Instagram and Google Maps document what the other person's screen shows and say nothing at all about notifying them. Question Does Snapchat notify when you turn off location? Not documented. Snapchat's Ghost Mode page does not say whether friends are told; it says only that in Ghost Mode your location "won't be visible to anyone else on the Map."
