How to stop sharing location with one person

Not everyone has to come off at once: Find My, Messages, Google Maps, Snapchat and Instagram all have a per-person control. In Find My it is People, the person, Stop Sharing My Location; in Google Maps it is Location sharing, the person, Stop. Apple is the only one of them that states whether that person is notified.

Every app here separates one share from the rest. The steps below are the vendors' own.

Find My, Messages and Contacts (iPhone)

Find My: "Select the People tab." "Choose the person that you want to stop sharing your location with." "Scroll down and tap Stop Sharing My Location."
Messages: "Open a conversation with the person or group that you've shared your location with." "Tap the name of the person or group at the top of the conversation." "Tap Stop Sharing."
Contacts, per Apple's Personal Safety guide: "Tap the person's name. Tap Stop Sharing My Location."
A pause rather than an end, same guide: "tap the name of the person you want to pause sharing your location with. Tap [the More button], then tap Hide Location." Apple adds: "When you hide your location, sharing automatically resumes the next day."

These are one share seen from four places. Apple says "The person that you stop sharing with won't be notified," and its Personal Safety guide adds that "the people you previously shared with may notice that you've stopped", and that on earlier operating systems they may get a notification in Messages. Either way your location "will disappear from the other person's Find My, Maps, Contacts, and Messages apps". For Hide Location, Apple says nothing about what they see.

Google Maps

In the app, iPhone or Android: open Google Maps, "Tap your profile picture or initial and then Location sharing." "Tap the profile of the person you don't want to share your location with anymore." "Tap Stop."
From Android's own settings: Settings, Location, Location services, Google Location Sharing, then "Find the person you want to stop sharing with. Next to the person's name, tap Stop."
On a computer: myaccount.google.com, People & sharing, Location Sharing, then Stop.

Google does not address whether the other person is told. It does document a side effect worth knowing: "Notifications stop when location sharing stops" — any arrival or departure alert they set on you ends with the share.

Snapchat and Instagram

Snapchat treats this as an audience list, not a switch: open the Map, tap the gear icon, then "Tap 'My Friends, Except…' and select the friends you don't want to see your location." Its sentence on notification is the plainest of any vendor here: "Friends you select aren't notified when you choose them." Instagram's map is the same shape — Messages, Map, Settings, Options, "Hide from...", each account, Done — and says nothing about whether those accounts are told.

Life360 is the exception: its switch is per Circle, not per person. "This only affects the Circle you turned it off in. If you are in multiple Circles, repeat the steps above in each Circle you're in."

Use the real switch

Question How to turn off location without notifying It depends on the app, and only Apple and Snapchat answer it in writing. Apple says the person you stop sharing with won't be notified, and its own safety guide adds that they may notice you have stopped; Snapchat says friends you pick for a location setting aren't notified when you choose them. Life360, Google Maps and Instagram document what the other person's screen shows instead, which is not the same promise. Question How to turn off location temporarily Yes, several of these apps ship a timer, and it is the only kind of temporary this site will describe. Find My shares for an hour or until the end of the day and can hide you from one person until the next day; Snapchat's Ghost Mode takes 3 hours, 24 hours or Until Turned Off; a Life360 Bubble runs up to 6 hours. Everywhere else the temporary version is the ordinary switch, turned off and then back on by you. Question Does Find My notify when you turn off location? No, and Apple states it in one sentence: "The person that you stop sharing with won't be notified." Apple's Personal Safety guide adds that the people you previously shared with "may notice that you've stopped", and that on earlier operating systems "they may receive a notification in Messages that you stopped sharing." Question Does Snapchat notify when you turn off location? Not documented. Snapchat's Ghost Mode page does not say whether friends are told; it says only that in Ghost Mode your location "won't be visible to anyone else on the Map." The one notification sentence Snapchat prints runs the other way: "Friends you select aren't notified when you choose them." App guide Find My Find My has one switch per person, a one-day pause per person, and one master switch for everyone; Messages, Maps and Contacts all reach the same share. Apple's sharing page says the person you stop sharing with is not notified. Apple's safety guide adds that they may notice you have stopped. App guide Google Maps Google Maps has three separate location switches. Location sharing sends your live position to people you chose, Timeline keeps a record of where you have been, and the app's location permission in phone settings decides whether Maps can read your position at all. Turning one off leaves the other two on.
