Does Find My notify when you turn off location?

Two Apple pages answer this question, and they answer slightly different questions. The support page is about the notification. The safety guide is about being noticed. Both are Apple's own words, and the honest answer uses both.

What Apple's sharing page says

Apple's page Share your location with iPhone covers stopping a share from Find My, from Messages and from Maps. Its sentence on notification is flat: "The person that you stop sharing with won't be notified." That is the only thing Apple says there about the other person, and it applies whether you end one share from the People tab or turn off Share My Location for everyone from the Me tab.

What Apple's safety guide adds

The Personal Safety User Guide describes what the other person experiences. "When you stop sharing your location, the people you previously shared with may notice that you've stopped. On earlier operating systems, they may receive a notification in Messages that you stopped sharing." It also says where you disappear from: "your location will disappear from the other person's Find My, Maps, Contacts, and Messages apps."

So the position does not go stale on their screen. It is simply gone, and a name that used to have a map next to it stops having one. Apple does not claim that goes unseen — it says they may notice.

The switch that is not documented

Taking the Find My app's own location permission away, at Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Find My, Never, is a different switch. Apple's Location Services page prints those steps but does not describe what people you share with see afterwards, and does not mention notification at all. If you want the documented outcome, the documented switch is Share My Location.

One person or everyone

Ending one share leaves every other share running. Turning off Share My Location ends all of them at once, including Family Sharing members. Apple's step lists for both, plus what stays on afterwards, are on the Find My page of this site.
